"Those small airplanes are dangerous!"

Ok. So this struck a nerve this morning in the newspaper... see the Cedar Rapids Gazette, May 11, page 11A. There is an article about the dangers of traveling for campaigns in small aircraft. The author does not even attempt to look at the other side, choosing rather to attack general aviation and deem those "small airplanes" unairworthy for the entire nation to read.

I've seen a lot of media bullcrap on this issue. The main problem is that they are writing about an industry/hobby/whatever that they simply do NOT understand, and therefore most of the articles they write are just completely wrong.

The quotes, though, are my favorite. They get people to give them a quote that sounds just right for making aviation seem unsafe. My question is: what does the freakin' media have against flying? Would they rather get rid of aviation totally and just drive places again?

Food for thought...

Love your enthusiasm for the miracle of flight. Someone the other day asked Mark Francis what was so fun about flying an ultralight aircraft. He replied that an hour of flying is like a "Weeks Vacation".
